Sturmovik!

Ilyushin IL-2 Aerosaur

Someone messaged me not too long ago asking if I’ve drawing any IL-2 aerosaurs, and I was reminded that I had a nearly-finished WIP of one sitting around for about a year - it was decent enough to tweak & finish into something presentable.

The design is a little outdated in some ways according to headword canon but I still liked it enough as just a critter.

“Skreh!”

I remember seeing an IL-2 fly over my apartment one time, such a loud and menacing aircraft in person

This has to be one of my favorites of yours so far, like some bird of prey going in for the kill with its talons outstretched

Fun fact. Sturmi was Finnish soldiers term for, of course to Sturmovik durind WW2.
Also seems like this one is based to IL-2M with 37mm cannons.

Aah I didn't know it was an official nickname! I had just come up with that on my own. That's excellent, thank you for sharing that tidbit.

And you'd be correct!

I've noticed you've been making the eyes less and less distinct on your aerosaurs, this one doesn't even seem to have any. Is that just me?

You'd be correct. The original ones from way back when were actually totally eyeless, and I'm kinda going back to that since I prefer the look. It's more alien/machine-y. Animal eyes tend to make them anthropomorphized in a way I don't want them to be.

They DO have optical sensor clusters in the cockpit area though, and those can look a bit eye-like depending on the 'saur. You just don't see them clearly from all angles of view. Also the newer the aerosaur, the more alien/mecha that optical cluster will look.

Ah. Then I wonder -since it's always been an interest of mine when it comes to anthropomorphized vehicles- would it then be more human accessible compared to the aerosaurs with a more filled cockpit?

I know I came across a picture of yours from awhile back with a little shark creature sitting in the cockpit of an aerosaur and it didn't have eyes, was it using this 'eyeless' version?

The ones modified that have the space for a person can be piloted, yes. It requires some tricky work but these creatures are completely mechanical despite some of their deceivingly animal-like features.

Oh my god that drawing haha. Yes that was one was eyeless/designed to be piloted. But the original eyeless versions go back to about '08 - you won't find them on here though, I've done a lot of clean-up since then.

I love 'em XD
So with more advanced jet engines, what happens to these proppy guys?

Those not destroyed in combat are "recycled" and the biomech processors are translated into new bodies. Doesn't always work, leads to some messes, but having these run around rogue is generally not an option.

With a culture that seems so dependant on these monsta's, I'd bet my money that there's a shitton of these guys running around anyway~
